Cosmetology Goes “Pink” for Breast Cancer Awareness

In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the FCHS Cosmetology class held a very “pink” grand opening on Oct. 7, featuring the application of pink hair extensions for interested students, staff, and members of the community. The goal was to raise awareness of breast cancer while raising money for the cosmetology program. The pink hair extensions– which cost $5 each—were made of real human hair (colored bright pink) which was applied with a fusion method that should keep the special strands in the hair for 4-6 weeks.

“It was a great turn out. On October 7th we had 63 clients,” said senior Hailey Miller. In addition, people could make appointments for other hair treatments, including a shampoo, blow dry and style for $7. “It was exciting for the class to work with clients for the first time,” said senior and Cosmetology class member Zoe Crues.

If you missed the event, it’s not too late to celebrate breast cancer awareness month while getting pampered. “Every Tuesday, from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm, we are taking clients.  Once a month, we open up the lab after school hours from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm,” said Cosmetology teacher Kathryn Wilkerson.  “We will be offering new services every open lab. The students only offer services that they have been properly trained to perform on clients.  As the year progresses, they will be offering a more broad range of services,” she added.

Upcoming dates for the open lab event include Nov. 4, Dec. 2, and Jan. 13. To schedule an appointment, call (434) 510-1935.
