The Mystery of the Lost and Found

Ever wonder where the lost items around the school disappear to? With such a large school, things can get lost everyday. When students’ items disappear it can appear hopeless to ever get them back. However, unknown to most students, there is a place where their items remain until claimed. This place is the lost and found. Located in the main office and by some vending machines, the lost and found collects countless items throughout the year. Wallets, lunchboxes, cellphones, jewelry, watches, keys, and even money appear here, waiting to be claimed.

Almost everyone has lost something at school at some point; yet few people know where they go when they are lost. In a poll taken of twenty random students, only six people knew where the lost and found was. Most of them questioned, “we have a lost and found?” Morgan Maupin ‘18 had lost her jacket in school and stated,  “I never found it because I didn’t know we had a lost and found.” Also, several students said that they had lost jackets, phones, and money.

This is a problem when all these items begin to pile up in the main office and no one picks them up. In an interview with Mrs. Magner, she claimed very little people show up to retrieve their items. She said the most common thing that ends up in the lost and found is sweatshirts. However, she has had items with large monetary values not get claimed. She stated, “the most expensive thing found was a diamond studded bracelet”. Many items of jewelry end up there like rings, necklaces, and earrings.

Cash can be easily dropped in the hallway on the way to class. Luckily, some people turn this money into the main office. Mrs. Magner said, “many people lose money, but very little claim it.” Several wallets are picked up with various amounts of money. If there is no form of identification found in the wallet, the owner hardly ever claims it.

Mrs. Magner said, “I would like people aware of the lost and found.” It is unfortunate when items stay in the main office, never to be claimed. The various items remain there throughout the entire year. If they are not retrieved when the school year is finished, they are donated to Goodwill or MACAA. Mrs. Magner wants to raise awareness of the lost and found. She has made several announcements, but items still remain in the office. The students who responded to the question “do you know where the lost and found is,” claimed that they did not even know FCHS had one. If more people know the where-abouts of the lost and found, then more items will be retrieved when lost. The lost and found is located at the main office and some vending machines. The ones by the vending machines are occasionally emptied into the one in the main office.  There it waits, ready to have their contents claimed.
