Students Battle Teachers for Prom

Being in charge of making the biggest dance of the year be a memorable one is a lot of responsibility, but the Junior Class Prom Committee is determined to succeed. There are meetings every Thursday morning on club weeks to plan it. The theme this year is Arabian Nights, and they are working towards making Prom better than ever, including a few changes.

One major change that Committee members are lobbying for is to hold the dance in the gym rather than the cafeteria this year. If you have ever attended a school dance before, you know that the cafeteria can become a very crowded space, so the thought is that having Prom in the gymnasium would give people more space to move around.

Along with getting a larger space, the Prom Committee is trying to get a higher attendance at the dance, particularly after the low turnout for the Winter Formal. The main way that the Prom Committee is promoting the dance is the basketball game ticket profits. “We are fundraising through the teacher versus student basketball game. Tickets are only $2, so buy one,” said Prom Committee member Mallory Berry.

In the past, the committee tried selling Yankee Candles but made a poor profit off of them, so they are hoping this game will have a good turnout. The game will be in the gym on March 10 during fourth block. The teachers and staff members participating include the following: James Barlow (Coach), Sam Lewis (Assistant Coach), Mitchell Pace and Nick Ward (referees), Jason Lee, John Helbert, Tony Christ, Heath Bralley, Jason Barnett, Jason Davis, Cameron Wilmer, Jimmy Koczan, Travis Bailey, Katie Wilkerson, Margo Bruce, Adele Scarborough, and Tammy Lyons.

Members of the student team include Josh Carlton (Head Coach), Zaquan Fortune (Assistant Coach), Davajinea White (Manager), Kason Douglas, Mark Grooms, Kirby Crenshaw, Robert Scales, Braden Turley, Matt Rafaly, Cody Abbott, Jakob Graff, Michael Shiner, Colby Deforge, Charlie Searcy, Craig Russo, Delonte Woodson, Chase Glover, Matt Lang, Darrah Martin, Chaniya Brown.

The Prom Committee is hoping to raise about $2,000 from this event.
