Baseball

The boys’ baseball teams had a pretty easy and rewarding week with a single game against Orange County on April 7. Both the JV and varsity teams represented Fluvanna well with wins. JV annihilated the Hornets 11-4 while varsity had a tougher game, yet still ended up beating Orange in a close 4-3 win. The win brought the varsity team’s season record to 3-5 thus far. “After a slow start this season, we put coal in the engine and started rolling our way through for a couple of wins,” said senior Alec Turley. Both teams’ next games are at Louisa County on April 14. “We plan on continuing our win streak for a while,” said Turley.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The guys’ lacrosse team hosted FUMA on April 10 with the JV Flucos suffering a tough 1-10 loss and varsity pulling out a close win by 7-6. Top scorers in the varsity game included junior James Byron and senior Josh Satterly with three goals each, and junior Joel Kesterson with one goal. “We have done pretty well this season, but we definitely have a few specific points we need to work on. Still, I feel we will do pretty well this season,” said Byron. The teams’ next matchups will be against Charlottesville at home on April 17.

Boys’ Soccer

The boys’ soccer teams travelled to Orange County on April 6. JV played a tough game but couldn’t defeat the Hornets, ultimately suffering a hard loss of 0-5. Varsity had a much more successful experience, crushing the Hornets 3-0. Scoring two goals for Fluvanna was sophomore Jameel Wilson, while junior Chris Dean made one goal.

The Flucos hosted Charlottesville for some extremely close games on April 9. The junior varsity team ended up with a frustrating 1-1 tie against the Black Knights, bringing their overall record to 0 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. The varsity team almost had the same result, but by the end, fell just short of a tie with a 2-1 loss. Senior Hunter Deforge, the lone scorer for the night, actually scored two goals, but one of them was disallowed due to an offsides call.

The teams next looked forwarding to hosting the Louisa Lions on April 13. “We are looking to have a better result than the last game. There’s a lot that we want to accomplish and there’s a lot that we are going to accomplish,” said senior Casey Johnson.

Softball

Coming back from spring break, the Lady Flucos had a game at Orange on April 7.  The JV girls started off the evening by playing a hard-fought game, but ultimately fell to Orange 4-3.

Meanwhile, the varsity girls struggled to keep up their undefeated record under the guidance of Coaches Jimmy Koczan and Aimee McCall (who are actually siblings).  After some setbacks, they came out victorious against Orange, winning 5-3.  Senior Lexi Scott had three RBI’s and  pitcher Annaleise Kennedy had 11 strikeouts.  This win advanced their record to 7-0.  “Our team effort really helped us to come out with the win,” said senior Sasha Morgan.

This week the teams face off in two district games.  They take on Louisa on April 14 and Western Albemarle on April 16, both at home.

Girls’ Soccer

Both girls’ soccer teams played at home against Orange on April. 7 with the JV girls shutting out Orange by a score of 4-0.  Their record is now 3-1. After beating Orange 6-1, the varsity girls have a winning season record of 3-2.  Standouts at the varsity game included junior Katie Stutz, who scored two goals. “We were putting our new skills from practice to use and really worked as a unit on the field,” said junior Maddie Messier.

Both teams expect a busy week, traveling to Louisa on April 13 and Western Albemarle on April 16.

Track

The girls’ track team made their mark at the meet at Woodberry Forest on April 7.  The girls 4×1 relay team did exceptionally well, placing second overall out of six team.  The boys’ team placed second overall as well with Vinny Agee and Kashawn Anderson both qualifying for Conference in high jump, and Matt Jonkman and Karel Bruce qualifying for Regionals in their jumping events.  These athletes then competed in the prestigious Gus Lacy Track Classic at FUMA on April 11.

At the Gus Lacy Track Classic, Julianna Elliot got a new personal record, placed 2nd in discus, and 5th in shot put.  “I had a fabulous time at this meet and I am so excited that I had the opportunity to compete,” said Elliott.  Senior Megan Copenhaver qualified for finals in shot put and placed 7th overall, and senior Julian Bonner got a medal for his 4×4 race.  Both the boys’ and girls’ teams placed third out of six teams.

Both teams will be at Powhatan on April 15 and return to Woodberry on April 18.
