Boys’ Basketball

On Jan. 11, the Fluvanna boys’ varsity basketball team traveled to Waynesboro in hopes of capturing their next win. However, the Flucos were disappointed, as the Waynesboro Little Giants prevailed with a score of 58-27. The Flucos suffered from the loss of senior Jay Amos who was out of the picture due to a sports injury which occurred Jan. 8 during a game against Louisa.

“We did good in the first half but we lost our intensity in the second. They just wanted to win more than we did,” said senior guard Nick Washington, who finished the evening with four points. Afterward, senior guard Jason Lee said “In order to win our next game we need to improve on our defense and make our shots.”

With four days to improve and adjust to a few tweaks and changes, the Flucos then faced off against Orange on Jan. 15 with a home court advantage. The boys gained an early lead over the Hornets and were up by the end of the first half, but could not hold on to that lead, losing 60-56. “We played well the whole game. We worked hard this whole week, but we just couldn’t pull out the win,” said sophomore Antonio Pelham, who finished the game with a whopping 25 points. Other outstanding performances came from Nick Washington, who finished with 14 points, and Jason Lee who added 11 points. The boys’ next game is Jan. 19 at Albemarle High School.

Girls’ Basketball

The Fluvanna girls’ varsity basketball team came ready to take on Waynesboro on Jan. 13. The Flucos never gave up, but ultimately fell short by a score of 37-22. Senior Katie Stutz had 50% of the team’s points for the evening. “I felt like as a team we were working through somethings, but overall, we pushed through and finished the game to the best of our abilities,” said junior Darrah Martin.

On Jan. 14, the Flucos were back in action in Orange. Tied at halftime, the Flucos kept fighting but couldn’t pull out the win, losing 51-35. “We fought hard. They were having their runs and they made their shots. We had our runs but our shots weren’t falling. We were still fighting hard till the clock hit zero,” said freshman Audrey Antesburger. Stutz lead the team offensively with 15 points. “We need to work on our press, cut people off, and beat them to the spot. We ran the game at our speed but we just have to have a stronger offense,” said Stutz. The Flucos’ next game is Jan. 19 at home versus Albemarle.

Before the girls’ varsity game on Jan. 13 the girls’ JV basketball team came out and stomped the Waynesboro Little Giants, winning 39-16. The Flucos held the Little Giants to only four points in the second half with their aggressive defense. Offensively, the Flucos’ top two scorers were eighth grader Nevaeh Ivory with 14 points and eighth grader Jules Shepherd with 8 points. “We started the second part of our season off great, and we worked our hardest last night,” said Shepherd.

Back to the court on Jan. 14, the JV girls squeezed the juice out of Orange and won 46-21. Ivory put up 15 points on the board for the Flucos. “It was a good game. I think we just need to work on free throws and defense. I also think we need to work on driving to the basket and finishing,” said Ivory. The JV Flucos’ next game will be Jan. 19 at home against Albemarle.

ACE

The ACE team traveled to Western Albemarle on Jan. 14 where they won against Orange, Monticello, and Charlottesville. The Flucos beat all three teams. “I think we did really well last night. One of our seniors was missing for the first match and we were still able to beat them, so that’s a good sign for next year,” said junior Eva McGehee. Coach Jimmy Small said the highlight of the evening was that “we beat all three teams we played.” Their next event will be conference on Jan. 25 at Broadway High School.
