Soccer

FCHS girls’ soccer found a lot of success last week against Western and Monticello.  On May 11, Varsity beat Western at home for the first time in three years.  The Flucos prevailed by a score of 1-0, with Maddie Messier scoring the goal for Fluvanna, assisted by Lexi DeMers.  As for JV, they took a hard loss of 4-1.  Meanwhile, both boys’ teams played Western away that night. Varsity lost by a score of 5-2 and JV lost as well.

On May 14, the girls played away at Monticello. After a Monticello player fouled Kiana Childress inside the box, a penalty kick was taken and scored by Lindsay Price, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the Flucos.  “We have shown so much improvement this season and it is constantly showing on the field for us.  Beating Western has really proved all of our effort has been worth it,” said sophomore Cyan Coates.

In other results against Monticello, the JV girls tied 1-1, and the varsity boys won 2-1.    “We’re all brothers on and off the field,” said varsity player Carter Allbaugh, additing “a win and a loss in a week shows what we’ve been through this season: ups and downs.”  The girls played again on May 18 at home against Powhatan for their Senior Night, while the boys played away.

Lacrosse

Varsity girls’ lacrosse played two games last week, one at home on May 12 against Western Albemarle, and the second away at Albemarle.  They took a hard loss on the 12th, but still managed to get one goal.  The next day, they fought hard but could not beat Albemarle, and came out of the game with a score of 17-4. Still, team members are focusing on the positive.  “We’re really coming together as a team and starting to flow.  We’re getting on the board basically every game, even with the injury of one of our best girls,” said junior Courtney Ott.

Meanwhile, the varsity boys had a long week with three games.  They played away at Patrick Henry on May 11, at Western Albemarle on May 12, and had their Senior Night at home against Albemarle on May 13.  Unfortunately for the Flucos, none of these nights netted a win.  “We have struggled this season without some of our best players on the field with us anymore, but we’ve grown through it and become better because of it,” said junior Joel Kesterson.  Both teams will play their first game in the Conference Tournament on May 20 when the girls will play at Monticello and boys will play at Western.

Baseball

Fluvanna Baseball played away the whole week, facing Western Albemarle on May 11 and Monticello on May 14 with both teams losing to Western (varsity by a score of 8-1). For varsity, the Monticello game marked a closer loss (15-11), while JV lost by a score of 14-4.  “We may be going through a rough patch now, but we always put in work, and we’re going to make a comeback,” said sophomore Charlie Searcy.  Both teams played home on May 18 against Powhatan.

Softball

After an extremely successful season, varsity girls’ softball team shows no signs of slipping towards the closing of the season. The team faced Western Albemarle on May 12 and appeared to swipe their victory with ease, coming in victorious by 12-1. Sophomore Toria Belew said that “We knew it would be a slow game before the start and those are the games that require extra focus. It was a slow start, but one inning was all it took to take the lead from 3-1 to 12-1.” The team continued their winning streak that May 14 when they played Monticello, beating them 11-2. Senior Lee Lee Robbins says that she is “excited to finish out the season strong and see how far we can take ourselves.” The Flucos’ next opponent will be Powhatan, away, on May 20.

Outdoor Track

The boys’ and girls’ track teams travelled to Louisa to compete on May 13. The girls had huge success at the meet with a few standout athletes including freshman track star Haley Kennedy, who has earned not only her mile, but also her two-mile personal record this season. “Championships are coming up and I think that we have a good chance of bringing home a trophy,” she said.  As has been common this season, senior Markyll Bland from the boys’ team earned a few first places and personal records at the Louisa meet. “It really all boils down to hard work in practice and pushing yourself mentally,” he said. Fluvanna track will host the Conference meet on May 19.

Girls’ Tennis

Last week was an eventful one for the Flucos, with several members travelling to John Handley to compete in conference play on May 12-13. Senior Tory Stribling played a singles match against John Handley, and a doubles match with partner Jessie Kirby against Louisa. Stribling fell to Handley with a score of 1-6 in both sets, but is satisfied with her performance. “John Handley is a competitive school for tennis and the score may not show it, but I played my best throughout the match,” said Stribling. Her doubles match with Kirby also did not fall in the Flucos’ favor, but they did push Louisa to a tiebreaker in the second set. The girls played next at home against Charlottesville on May 18.

Boys’ Tennis

Like the girls’ team, the boys’ travelled on May 12-13 to John Handley. Keegan Campanelli had a 6-1/6-1 singles victory in the conference quarterfinals, but then fell in the semis against Handley. “The competition was very intense [but] I’m satisfied with the way I played,” he said. Campanelli and Nikola Bajs advanced 6-2/6-1 in the Conference 23 quarterfinals for doubles play. The boys compete at home against Amherst on May 18.
