December Staff Member of the Month: Lori Hoffman

December’s Staff Member of the Month is Lori Hoffman, a math teacher who is celebrating her 22nd year in education. “I teach Pre-Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Math,” said Hoffman. Her day-to-day activities involve making lesson plans, teaching, grading, contacting parents, and staying after school from Mondays-Thursdays to provide additional help to students. “I love working one-on-one with my students after school to help them understand the material covered in class,” she said.

Hoffman was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, but moved to Virginia Beach at the age of three and grew up there.“Virginia Beach is where I call home,” she said. After getting an undergraduate degree from Longwood College, Hoffman worked for two years as a systems analyst for a defense contractor before she got her master’s degree at George Washington University. “I am married and have two children who are both Fluvanna County High School Graduates. They are 24 and 20 years old,” she said.

There’s no doubt that Mrs. Hoffman is a vital member of the math-staff at FCHS, and many of her fellow teachers agree. “She has taken it upon herself to help so many people with no expectation of thanks or appreciation. She does these things because they are what is needed to be done. That is rare to find, even in a profession built on giving to others,” said math teacher Jason Barnett. Mitchell Pace, another teacher agreed, saying “few people work harder and strive to educate and help more kids than “the Hoff.”
