Swim & Dive: Feb 2-9

On Feb. 8, the Flucos’ best swimmers dove into a fast-paced conference meet at Sweet Briar College.  After an impressive start to the season, the FCHS swimmers entered confident and held their position among the conference’s best athletes in every event.  “The guys placed third overall and missed second by one point, which is the closest we’ve been in a long time,” said sophomore Jonathan Corbin.  The girls did just as well.  “We placed second, and we got a trophy, which was pretty cool,” said junior Kate Almarode.  Senior diver Bryce Campanelli won the meet in diving, Alex Sprouse won the 100 meter breast stroke, and two of the team’s relays qualified for Regionals—all results of a long season of hard training.

All in attendance recall the meet as hectic, as several impassioned teams strived to take home the winning title.  “Swim is a very fast-paced sport, and the pool was very small and crowded.  So you really have to be on top of things so you don’t miss your race,” said Almarode.  Despite the confusion, the FCHS athletes all clocked impressive times, and are looking forward to the coming Regional meet.
