Track December 9-13

TRACK

In indoor track, runners, throwers, jumpers, and vaulters participate in many individual

events and several relays— races that require strength and skill. The ultimate “race,” however,

doesn’t necessarily involve prowess or speed. To be successful, athletes need a little Christmas

spirit and a whole lot of peppermint. The “candy cane relays,” which are held at practice when

the season draws nearer the end of December, are one of the team’s favorite traditions. “The

candy cane relays are the best,” said junior Hayley Kline. “And Mrs. Brogan even lets us have a

practice where we can wear our Christmas sweaters,” she added. According to her runners,

Coach Brogan has a festive holiday sweater for each day of December through Christmas Day.

Early on Dec. 7, the Fluco track team headed two hours away to Caroline County to

compete in the “Polar Bear Invitational.” Ironically, this indoor track meet was held outdoors.

“Although it was really cold,” said senior Mary McGehee, “we placed very well. Both girls’ and

boys’ teams placed second out of six teams. I think Mrs. Brogan and Mr. Casto were pretty

happy.”

The team traveled to Woodberry Forest School on Dec. 13, and tasted triumph once

again. To the boys’ coach, Tom Casto, the meet was a success. Several of his athletes showed

early potential and qualified for upcoming conference and state meets in events including shot

put, pole vault, triple jump, the 55m dash, and the 2-mile run. Indeed, for both seniors and

underclassmen, boys and girls, the season is looking bright—almost as bright as the lights on

their colorful Christmas sweaters.
