Here’s a recap of this year’s Homecoming Spirit Week:

‘Merica Monday

The first task of Spirit Week:  Honor America. And students took to it with gusto. Halls were flooded with red, white, and blue-clad bodies and American-colored apparel. Some students even wore the American flag on their chests. But the general consensus was clear:  America is awesome, and as Zach Kent said (multiple times) Communism isn’t.

Toga  Tuesday

Day Two was a new Greco-Roman inspired addition to the school spirit cannon.  The SGA ran instructional videos all week on how students should make their own togas out of bed sheets without falling afoul of the dress code.  This experimental new spirit day proved a success as the school’s patricians showed up in full force clad in the ancient (but drafty) garments.

Way Back Wednesday

Way Back Wednesday is a recurring theme during Spirit Weeks. Every year, SGA allocates a single day to honor the past and just generally dress up in an outdated fashion. Seniors got the 80’s, juniors the 70’s, sophomores the 60’s, freshmen the 50’s, and eighth graders received a new tier: the 40’s.

The seniors, who had been waiting all their high-school lives for the 80’s, were ecstatic. A large portion of the senior body dressed up for the occasion. Three of them carried a boom box around campus, playing music in the hallways. Bryce Campanelli, one of the seniors involved in the boom box escapade,  said “Way Back Wednesday was my favorite. I was rocking the boom box.”

Twin Day Thursday

Twin day was, quite possibly, the most interesting day of Spirit Week– probably because it overlapped with one of the most sacred holidays of the year: Halloween. Students wandered the halls decked in costumes, including a giant rabid panda, twin Minions, frolicking felines, two guys in uncomfortable-looking banana suits, and a few students dressed up in “Custom Ink” t-shirts. And of course there were the inevitable Halloween monsters:  zombies, witches, and vampires, oh my!

Fluco Fanatic Friday

The finale of the week was Fluco Fanatic Friday, the inevitable conclusion to any spirit week.  Who cares if the colors clash? Fluco Fanatic Friday is the perfect opportunity for students to show off their Fluco pride with a whole day of blue and yellow topped off by a Pep Rally, a parade, and a football game at the end. Definitely one of the Flucos’ favorite days.

Homecoming Dance Recap

The excitement across the week was certainly there, but did the dance live up to its promise? According to the student body, yes. Despite the predictable grumbling about the playlist (when have Flucos NOT complained about that?) this year’s Homecoming Dance was deemed by many to be the best in years.

“Everyone was hyped. I would quantify the level [of hype] as just over 9000,” said senior Geoff Goodwin. Senior Anna Dean said that the music was better this year than it was in the past. and the decorations (based on the Yellow Brick Road of Oz) actually resembled the movie. Sure, it was stiflingly hot as usual, but all in all, it was a night to remember.
