PerfectSlight Sets its Sights on Fluvanna

Sometimes the most random things can become the start of something great. One day, junior Bowen Reed and senior Maxx Turner were just talking and discovered that they both enjoyed listening to rock music. “I came up with the idea for a band and Maxx also thought it was a good idea,” said Reed. In addition to Turner and Reed, junior also joined, forming a band called PerfectSlight. Reed and Turner both sing, play drums and play the guitar. “Maxx and I alternate,” said Reed. White Osteen plays the bass.

Since forming this past February, PerfectSlight has been busy performing whenever possible. “We’ve been doing small gigs at Cuppa Joe this summer about every other weekend,” said Reed. That has given the band a little notoriety… and a local fan base. “We want to make people more aware of us,” said Reed.

Cuppa Joe owner Cliff Bunyea told the band that he really enjoys having the band perform in his coffee shop. He’s not their only fan. “I was sitting up in Cuppa Joe’s, wearing my PerfectSlight t-shirt and it was the first time I ever heard them play. They rocked Cuppa Joe’s for two hours and brought in $80 in tips,” said junior Robbie Via, who is friends with the members of PerfectSlight.

Along with performing at Cuppa Joe, the group occasionally plays on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. Fluvanna County has quite a few talented student musicians and bands, and PerfectSlight is a perfect example. “It’s nice to see people listen to us when we’re performing and enjoy what they’re hearing,” said Reed. Along with regular performances, they practice one to two times a week, every week.

Reed, Turner and Osteen like to perform covers of already-produced songs, such as “How You Remind Me” by Nickelback and “Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down. Along with performing covers, they have written a good percentage of the songs they perform. With all of the songs they have written, the band members are hoping to record in a studio by the end of the year. While PerfectSlight hasn’t had anyone contact them about a recording contract, maybe someday they’ll make it big and become famous for their music.
