To help relieve some stress for students caused by exams, the BETA Club hosted a Winter Formal on Dec. 12. This was the first time since 2012 that FCHS had held a Winter Formal, but it also had a twist: It was a Sadie Hawkins dance, meaning that the girls were supposed to ask the boys. For many of the girls, being able to be the one doing the “asking” was a welcomed experience.

“I really enjoyed being able to ask the boys because I feel like I finally beat Gavin Patrick at something,” said senior Morgan Kennedy.

“It was really fun to find a clever way to ask Braden Turley to formal,” said junior Nicole Kent. On the other hand, some people, like junior Isabella O’Brien, felt that making the dance a Sadie Hawkins dance may have caused fewer people to show up, although the dance did sell nearly 200 tickets.

The music was a bit different for this dance compared to others, being more “techno” under DJ and FCHS graduate Tristan Duenas. In fact, some students said they felt the music was more difficult to dance to. Still, others said nothing could prevent them from being on the dance floor and having fun. “My favorite song that came on was The Cupid Shuffle. The cheerleaders really made that one fun,” said Kennedy.

The dance was more laid back than Homecoming and Prom tend to be, in part because there were many sports events going on that night. Teams with matches that day included wrestling, swim, track, and forensics, so many students had to make a quick turn around from sporting events to the dance. However, some students said they appreciated that the tight turnaround may have saved them money since they had no time to go out for dinner before the dance.

During the week, prior to the dance, students voted for the Snowball King and Queen and Snowball Prince and Princess as they purchased their tickets. At the dance the winners were finally revealed: Snowball King was Joel Kesterson and Snowball Queen was Ashley Cordes, while Nicole Kent and Braden Turley respectively took the honors of Snowball Princess and Snowball Prince.
