The Lanyard That Saved Homecoming

While everybody wants their Homecoming to be spectacular, few realize that can’t happen without one thing: money. So SGA (Student Government Association) members have turned to a lowly lanyard to help raise funds for the dance.

Recently advertised in a series of commercials on “In the Know,” the Fluco lanyards—which sell for $5 each—are a major source of funding for Homecoming. After all, SGA gets no money from the school or parent teacher organization, and ticket sales only cover so much of the cost of the dance.

Unfortunately, the lanyards had a little hitch. After selling about 30 of them, it became apparent that something was wrong.  “First we heard one broke, then we heard more broke.  We discovered the stitching was shoddy,” said SGA member Abbey Neifert.  After this discovery the SGA members took it upon themselves to re-stitch all 250 lanyards.  “It took a couple days and was really labor-intensive,” said Clay Bomberger. While SGA members believe that these efforts should have taken care of any further defects, students who have problems with the lanyards should “just bring them to my room and we’ll fix any problems for you,” said SGA Adviser David Small.

This year’s Homecoming theme is “Yellow Brick Road” with decorations reminiscent of the movie Wizard of Oz.  Oz’s Emerald Castle will greet students as they walk through the door, right after they walk under the rainbow arch of balloons.  The yellow brick road will wind around the entire cafeteria through cornfield decorations, talking trees, and the house that fell on the Wicked Witch of the East.  SGA estimates that total dance costs could run over $2,000, including decorations, lights, tickets, and food for students and chaperones.

So if you are interested in having a great Homecoming, buy a Fluco lanyard for only $5 and be sure to get your tickets to the dance on Nov. 3. You’ll not only have a great time (and be less likely to lose your keys!), but you’ll also help others, since half of the profits from the dance will go to support local adoption organizations.
