Flucos celebrate at a pep rally.

Fluvanna County High School has a fair share of traditions from Lumberjack Friday to Powder Puff, but if you’re anywhere between 8th and 11th grade, you may have never heard of Fluco Fest.  Fluco Fest is a spring tradition where students are supposed to take the day off from staring blankly at textbooks and enjoy fun activities throughout the day.  The last two Fluco Fests were cancelled due to weather (which explains why so many underclassmen have never heard of it).  But never fear:  baring catastrophic natural (or man-made) events, Fluco Fest has finally returned to save students from losing their never-ending staring contests with textbooks—at least on Friday, March 27.

On that date, seniors will be released at 9:15 am to the auditorium and have breakfast at 9:30.  From 10 am to 12:12, seniors will watch an approved movie, then leave for 4th block or A lunch.  After D lunch, all students will go to 5th block. Seniors will be release to various locations at 2:10 to prepare to film a lip dub video, while underclassmen will be released to the gym at 2:15.  Lip dub filming will take place from 2:20-2:30 pm, followed by a Macho Man Volleyball game and a prep rally in the gym.

Many students are welcoming the opportunity to break away from studying and hanging out with friends.  When asked what he liked about Fluco Fest senior Collin Coleman said that he enjoys “having a lot of free time…I think it could be a good kick off to spring break.”

However, not everyone enjoys the idea of Fluco Fest.  One senior, who asked to remain anonymous, said “It’s terrible and a complete waste of time.”  When asked how Fluco Fests that were held at the old high school compared to the plans for the current one, she said “It’s dull, but at least we had more options at the old school.”

Some of those who participated in Fluco Fests at the old high school remember it more fondly.  One 2014 graduate, Brandi Pannell, said that Fluco Fests prior to 2012 had rock climbing walls, live music, games, bouncy houses, and free food.  And while this year the seniors will receive free breakfast, some are disappointed in this year’s lack of outdoor activities.

Although not everyone is on board with Fluco Fest there are many who are silently counting the days up to March 27 (or at least, spring break).  Unfortunately if you’re dreading the 27th there isn’t much you can do.  Much like prep rallies, attendance isn’t an option, so if you’re not a fan of Fluco Fest or pep rallies then you’ll just have to tough it out. So make sure you grab whatever you need to make it through the day.
