Flucos Stun With SOL Scores

When the Virginia Department of Education released the Standards of Learning (SOL) test scores for the state of Virginia on Aug. 16, it proved to be good news for FCHS. The school continues to surpass the state averages in 14 of the 17 areas tested, including the course finals and 8th grade.

In the state of Virginia, 80% of students passed the mathematics exam for their course, this compared to 83% in Fluvanna. FCHS also exceeded the state average in mathematics in grades 4, 6, and 8. Fluvanna students earned an 80% or higher on 7 of the 9 mathematics exams.

The school has also been providing support to its economically disadvantaged population. That group improved 9 points in writing, surpassing the state by 10 points. It also saw a 9 point gain in social studies, exceeding the state average by 6 points, and a 3 point gain in science that surpassed the state average for this subgroup by 3 points.

Despite the fact that it was the school’s first time teaching AP Human Geography, 100% of students passed the World Geography SOL test. In addition, Biology at the high school ranked 15 out of 132, while Earth Science ranks 12th in the state.

“By working together as a collaborative team, we can better serve our students and improve our instructional practices. We are excited about the gains we have made, but understand there is always room for improvement,” stated Brenda Gilliam, Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
