Volleyball

Taking on Charlottesville High School on Sept. 15, the Fluvanna varsity volleyball team didn’t start the game running, but they certainly ended up pulling it all together, taking the team to victory by the end of the night. “We didn’t communicate. We needed to start off stronger,” said junior Toria Belew. But they quickly got their act together and ended the match in three sets. “The first set was 25-21, then it was 25-12, then 25-14. We got stronger as the night went on,” said sophomore Abby Sherman.

The varsity volleyball team also had another winning night Sept. 17 against Louisa with stats of 25-16, 25-14, and 25-16.  Meanwhile, the JV counterparts have also started the season off strong. “I think the team did good,” said sophomore Jillian Stutz about their game against Louisa.  “We are going to have a really good season,” she added.

Both JV and varsity volleyball teams play at Western Albemarle on Sept. 21 and at Powhatan on Sept 23.

Football

The JV football was hopeful to pull out a “W” on Sept. 16 at Culpeper.“I think the game will go good because of better offense from last, working harder on defense for outside contain, making more tackles, and a better run game,” quarterback Justin Sullivan said prior to the game.  Despite his hopes, however, the JV team was unable to bring home that win, losing to Culpeper 20-0.

As for varsity, they lost their Homecoming game to Culpeper 33-6 on Sept. 18. “There’s not much to say. Our team has come a long way since last year. The game didn’t reflect the hours we had spent preparing for our opponents. But we will begin to prepare for Charlottesville and put Culpeper out of our minds,” said sophomore Trevor O’Dell.

The varsity football team has their next game at Charlottesville on Sept. 24, while JV next plays at home against Charlottesville on Sept. 22.

Golf

The Fluvanna golf team began their week at Monticello High School with a match on Sept. 15. This match was a successful one, as the team had their lowest score of the year. Junior Jack Stanke led the way and won medalist honors with a +2 (38). “I feel like I have really improved all year, and my game is finally coming together at the right point,” said Stanke.

The team will participate  in the Jefferson District Golf Tournament at Orange on Sept. 21. The team will also play in the Conference 29 at Turner Ashby on Sept. 24.

Cross Country

The boys’ cross country team had a big win Sept. 16 on their home course at Pleasant Grove in a quad-meet with Louisa, Orange, and Powhatan. The top Fluco of the boys’ team for this race was Andrew Guess with a sub-19 minute race. The following top ten Flucos included Jack Rice, Jonathan Corbin, and Keegan Campanelli. “It was a really fun race. I felt like I didn’t run my best, but the team did really well,” said sophomore Jack Rice.

Meanwhile, the girls’ cross country team also picked up a big team win at the same meet. Kristen Cabrera won the meet with a time of 21:06, followed by Saige Haney in third, Bridget Bossong in fifth, Haley Kennedy in sixth, and Emily Goodson in eighth place. In addition, almost all of the girls had a new personal record on the 5K course. “I think the team worked together, and we all performed well,” said sophomore Haley Kennedy.

The boys’ cross country team also ran in the Woodberry Invitational on Sept 19, with Andrew Guess finishing in 45th place.  The girls’ cross country team also ran at the same meet. The team placed 3rd overall with two girls placing in the top twenty, including Kristen Cabrera in sixth and Saige Haney in seventh. The JV team finished fourth overall at the same meet.

Both cross country teams have their next meet at Orange on Sept. 23.
