Wrestling

Last week, the wrestling team had a rocky couple of matches, but like any great wrestler, they were able to pull through. On Dec. 5, the Flucos managed to place third while away at Spotswood. Senior wrestler Quint Crouch commented on the meet and the season. “It’s going to be a great season,” he said confidently. Quint ended with an 0-2 record that night.

The Dec. 11 and 12 matches took place away at Harrisonburg. On the 12th, Sophomore Jimmy Dillahunt placed 4th out of the many students participating. Assistant Coach Jordan Divine offered his congratulations to Dillahunt and also commented on the future of the team. “We’re very excited,” Divine said.

The wrestling team meets at Fluvanna to face FUMA on Dec. 16.

ACE

Fluvanna County High School hosted the ACE meet on Dec 9, but as is customary for the hosting team, they did not compete. Teachers Matthew Morrison and Craig Edgerton, as well as FCHS graduate Lynelle Douma, were readers. All of the matches went well, and the many teams left Fluvanna having been made feel very welcome. The next meet takes place on Jan. 13 at Western Albemarle.

Band

On Dec 12, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (VBODA) held their annual honor band auditions to see who would make up the best band in District 13. Over 30 Flucos auditioned from both the high school and the middle school to try and fill the seats on the two high school and one middle school honor bands. According to band teacher Michael Strickler, Fluvanna students took an astounding 15 seats in the various bands. In addition, two more FCHS students will act as alternates.

Following is a complete list of Flucos who earned spots: Grace Newman: Piccolo (2nd band); Shalon Arrington: Clarinet (Alternate MS band); Alysa Everly: Clarinet (2nd band); Maddie Shiflett: Clarinet (2nd band); Delaney Reed: Clarinet (2nd band); Laura Moore: Clarinet (2nd band); Devon Shifflett: Bass Clarinet (1st band- 2nd chair); James Milligan: Alto Sax (1st band- 2nd chair); Connor Reilly: Bassoon (1st band- 1st chair); Veronica Reyes: Horn (2nd band); Corban Van Ornum: Trombone (1st band); Oliver Dubon: Tuba (1st band- 1st chair); Jason Dech: Trombone (MS Band- 1st chair); Emma Bagby: Oboe (Alternate MS Band); Noah Amato: Horn (MS Band- 2nd chair); Vincent Reyes: Horn (MS Band); Megan Dech: Horn (MS Band); Seth Etchison: Trombone (Alternate MS Band).

Boys’ Basketball

The boys’ basketball team had a rough start to the week on Dec. 8 against Albemarle, but finished the week out with a win against Orange. The Flucos first lost 62-46 against a stacked Albemarle team. Albemarle’s early full-court press scrambled the Flucos and gave them a shaky start, but the Flucos ended up capitalizing in the second half. , although not enough to pull out a win. Sophomore Antonio Pelham and Senior Jay Amos had 13 points apiece. Although the Flucos are 1-5 for the season, they still hope to find plenty of time in the season for improvement. Their next game is Dec. 15 at Monticello High School.

Girls’ Basketball

The Lady Flucos picked up a huge win against Orange to secure a big, early Jefferson District win. The Flucos’ defense closed strong, making sure the game wasn’t going to be close. The lead scorer was Katie Stutz who had a total of 19 points, 13 of them coming in the second half, when the Flucos most needed them. Other significant players included Tamara Lewis, who finished with 10 points, Darrah Martin with nine points, and Chaniya Brown with seven points. The girls’ next game is Dec. 15 at FCHS.

Fluco Swim

The Fluco Swim team met at Fork Union Aquatic Center on Dec. 12, where the girls’ team tied for second place with Seton. The boys’ team, on the other hand, finished fourth out of eight teams, due to most of the Fluco boys being away at a club meet. Best performances of the event included Sam Hagan, who placed 7th in the 100 fly and 5th in the 100 free. Fefe Nardone placed 3rd in both the 100 fly and 100 free, Morgan Maupin was 3rd in the 50 free, and, Lydia Reynard was 4th in the 50 free. Meanwhile, the girls’ 200 medley relay placed 3rd, while the girls’ 200 free relay placed second– just one second off state qualifying. The Flucos’ next meet will be Dec. 15 at the Woodberry Invitational.
