At FCHS, various Fine Arts electives are offered to boost student creativity and provide a step away from the typical core curriculum. Students can take classes such as Journalism, Photography, Choir, Guitar & Piano Lab, and Art if they have a free space in their schedule that semester. “I’ve taken many fine arts classes throughout high school and they helped create a space where I could have fun and take a break from my harder classes,” said senior Megan Drumheller.

Tuning their way into artistry, Choir and the music labs, including Guitar and Piano, are available to students school-wide. Whether it’s finding the perfect pitch, sight-reading sheet music, or improving memory through analysis and repetition, these musical fine arts open a new world of creativity past the usual pen and paper. “Music has always been a creative outlet for me and I appreciate the school for offering this outlet for other students who feel pressured from schoolwork,” said senior Brianna Bates.

Utilizing creativity is a foundation in Art class. Taught by art teacher Michelle Coleman, students develop and enhance their own creativity through sketches, paintings, and sculptures. Here, senior Megan Pounsberry begins her canvas sketching.

Photography is one of the many fine arts provided at Fluvanna. When it comes to composing, capturing, and editing, Photography gives students the opportunity to learn and use hands-on mechanical and artistic techniques. “I’ve always loved photography, so having this outlet at school is very beneficial to that passion of mine,” said senior Cayden Lucas.

In Journalism, students have the opportunity to write news articles and work on the yearbook. By strengthening writing, graphic design, and media literacy, the class provides students skills that are not only fun, but valuable even after high school.
