TV1 teaches students how to create videos using cameras and different software to edit their work. Students film, edit, and make projects while learning teamwork while getting used to the cameras and editing programs, while also building creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills. Students gain experience by creating content based on announcements and short films.

A popular part of the class is when students gather to watch each other’s projects as teacher David Small plays them on the big screen in class. This gives students a chance to learn different styles and ideas. “We show work from each other’s classes to showcase strong examples of filmmaking,” said Small.

Small’s students can often be seen filming projects in the halls. “Mr. Small’s projects are not only unique, but great for development of cinematographic skills. His projects and class involve multiple aspects related to cinematography, from shooting our own shows, making our own music, and filming numerous films,” said sophomore Ava Bass.

The class gathers in a circle to review a book that explains different camera shots, helping students understand how to frame scenes better. Small often gives examples of when to use each type of shot. The group discussions help students feel more confident in their work and using the camera.

At the end of “In the Know” (ITK), the daily news program during 2nd block, students in the TV1 class are responsible for taking down and putting away equipment after the show. Students turn off mics and unplug cameras and work together to clean up. Sometimes, students don’t take the equipment down because they need it to practice filming skills. “I am so impressed by the creativity and work ethic of the students who come through the TV Production program,” said Small.
