Streaming platforms are constantly available, allowing people across the world to have access to an unlimited variety of content from their screens. But a lot of people don’t realize that these streaming services have changed how often people go to the movies.
¨This convenience saves money and time, which makes staying home more appealing than going out to the movies,”said FCHS English teacher Sherry Esch.
This raises the question: Are movie theatres going extinct due to the competition?
“Streaming services have changed how often people go to the movie theaters,” said FCHS senior Henry Jeffries. “There are many opportunities to watch movies. There are an abundance of apps to watch movies on, even movies that are in theaters,” said Jeffries.
While theaters still offer a unique experience with large screens and fantastic sound, as well as snacks and popcorn, the ease and comforts of streaming often outweigh that experience for everyday movie watching. As a result, convenience has played a major role in shifting how people choose to watch movies.
Now that streaming is so popular, it is causing many to feel there is less value in having physical theaters, especially with money being one of the key reasons people decided to stay home with a streaming service,
Still, not everyone thinks that movie theatres’ days are numbered.
“I do not think that this is the case. Movie theaters are a great way to get out of the house, go on a date, and even enjoy some alone time,” said Jefferies.
Going to the theater can also be a social experience, allowing friends and families to enjoy a film together without distraction. In addition, seeing a movie on opening night creates a sense of excitement.
“I think movie theaters will always offer something that streaming services can’t, such as a fun time, really good popcorn, and very comfortable seats,” said Jefferies. “Theaters can still offer things that streaming services can’t, like the large screen, surround sound, and a dark atmosphere which can make the movie more interesting and fun,” he added.
“Movie theaters still offer an amazing experience that cannot be achieved at home,” said Esch.
In addition, many people still choose theaters for big releases, special events, or social outings. Streaming and movie theaters will likely coexist, each serving different purposes for viewers.
Junior Christian Johnson agrees. “I think that [theatres and streaming services] will both continue to exist, but the movie theaters will lose some value in the future, as big companies push streaming services. Although this may be true, it also means streaming services will get more expensive as they take on more titles. Finally, movie theaters may see a rise in popularity as a sort of nostalgia trend, or people realizing that the theater is superior to their home TV,” he said.
Ultimately, while streaming has changed viewing habits, the movie theater experience still holds importance for people who enjoy movies as a special event rather than just everyday entertainment.
“Streaming has changed the way we watch movies, but the magic of the big screen is something that can’t be replaced,” said Johnson.
