The new “Super Mario Galaxy” movie smashed into theaters at the start of April, quickly becoming one of the top movies this year. This movie had the biggest domestic opening day of 2026, and as of May 3, it has grossed nearly $900 million at the box office, tracking higher than its predecessor, 2023’s “Super Mario Bros.”
If you haven’t seen it yet, “Super Mario Galaxy” is a good movie for a fun evening out, and is very entertaining for many age groups since it is light and brings back nostalgia for those who grew up playing the original game.
Many of the series’ favorite characters are again showcased in this sequel, with the most popular being Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson). Bowser Jr. joins the fun as the villain.
I enjoyed watching “Super Mario Galaxy” because it really took me back to my childhood, has entertaining movie combat, and a strong storyline, with Bowser Jr. trying to recapture his dad, Bowser, after Mario and his allies beat him, and after the Princess holds him captive in a miniature fort. While Bowser Jr. sets out to destroy Princess Peach’s castle, the Princess is looking for her long-lost sister, Princess Rosalina, who has been captured to even the playing field.
I would recommend this movie to everyone, even if you haven’t watched the previous “Super Mario” movie. The only bad thing about this movie is how short it is. At only 98 minutes long, there is a lot to cram in, so I would’ve liked them to focus on one scene at a time instead of jumping all over the place.
I’d rate this movie an 8.5/10. You can currently see the movie locally at Regal Stonefield in Charlottesville and at the Alamo for another 10 days or so, after which it will leave theaters and stream on Peacock.
