Following two days of heavy snow and ice, Jan. 24-25, Fluvanna was covered in 6-8 inches of what was quickly dubbed “snowcrete.” Flucos were put out of school for seven school days, two of which were considered remote learning, and even when students returned on Feb. 4, it was to an unprecedented three-hour delay schedule.
Over the unexpected break, many had to discover different ways to spend their time, unable to even leave their driveways. For some students, it was like a dream come true.
“I love being able to relax and catch up on things during snow days. Some of the things I caught up with are schoolwork, time with my family, sleep, and cleaning around the house. I had lots of school work to catch up on, especially with the two virtual days that were planned, so I enjoyed having time to get it all done. I also had lots of time to be with my family,” shared sophomore Abby Caruso.
Some students used the snow as an opportunity to continue working hard and took advantage of the inclement weather.
“I still kept myself pretty busy. Me and my friend went out through the neighborhood to shovel people’s driveways for some quick money. It was pretty hard since all of the snow had frozen over and turned into straight ice blocks. But we made just short of $1000 in total, so it was all worth it. I continued going to the gym as much as I could, and got stronger as well,” said junior Kenneth Klein.
The school-less snow days brought a lot of joy and freedom to many students.
“I love that I can spend time with my family and be a kid again, playing in the snow. Our life slows down for a couple of days, and we just enjoy each other’s company. I also love that we get off of school, especially in Fluvanna. If you live on a main road and can leave your house, you most likely get free days to hang out with friends and do whatever you want,” shared junior Evelyn Hughes.
However, along with the happiness, there was discontent.
“I hate how cold it gets during snow days. It’s annoying being stuck in the house with nowhere to go. After a while, it starts to get really boring. I don’t like having to make up school days later, and shoveling snow is the worst,” said freshman Octavion Booker.
Whether it was through binge-watching shows, shoveling driveways, or spending time with loved ones, Flucos across the county made the most out of their extended break.
“I love making snow angels, snowmen, and sledding. Most importantly, I love making snowballs and throwing them for my dog, who thinks it’s a regular ball and chases after it. There’s so much I love about snow days,” said junior Amelia Mozingo.
