Over the years, the shoe brand Birkenstock has grown in popularity. Anywhere you go these days, you see to be able to find some version of the famous brand on someone’s feet. But why is an orthopedic shoe brand so popular, including among teens?

Birkenstocks are made with cork soles that mold to the wearer’s foot shape for comfort and support. They’re made with suede, cork, and a layer of jute (a strong, durable plant fiber). The quality of their materials keeps the shoes from falling apart—unless, of course, they’re worn every day.

The popular shoe brand was originally founded in 1774 in Germany, but in recent years has become increasingly popular around the world. In 2022, the brand’s popularity skyrocketed, with their most sought-after styles being their “Arizona” sandals and “Boston” clogs. Many users love them because they pair well with both dressed-up and dressed-down looks.

“I absolutely love mine and wear them every day. Sometimes I feel too tired to lace up my sneakers, so I just slide my Birkenstocks on,” said freshman Annaly Correa.

If you ask, many Birkenstock wearers claim to love their shoes, with the Bostons and Arizonas being called easy to slip on and perfect for a variety of looks.

“I love my Birkenstocks because of how comfortable, cute, and efficient they are to put on,” said senior Carson Johnston. “I think they’re popular because of the quality, as well as influence from those who have them.”

Some young people don’t embrace the popularity of Birkenstocks, saying they’re too expensive for a simple shoe.

“I never really owned a pair because of the cost, but they do look cool,” said senior Logan Bishop.

“I feel like they’re really boring and bulky. They look like a weird colonial shoe, and it doesn’t look comfortable to wear,” said sophomore Michael “Dean” Dillon, although he later admitted that “they match easily with outfits.”

If you want a Birkenstock look at a cheaper price, they have an EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate, a type of plastic foam) option which retails for around $55. Otherwise, their classic leather and cork look can range from $118 to $170 per pair. You can find them at the Birkenstock website or at stores like DSW and DICK’S Sporting Goods.
