Pops of pink, purple, green, and more have been flourishing in the school halls as a popular hair trend has arisen. Days where brightly colored hair was a shock to see are long gone.
“I colored my hair mid-July 2025. My inspiration was a girl on TikTok, and I’ve wanted my hair to be purple for a long time. I plan to keep my hair purple until November, and then I want to do dark red for my next color,” said junior Sophia Martinez .
The pink hair trend, in particular, became popular around June 2025, but dying only the back of the hair isn’t a new trend. The trend is originally called “peekaboo” and peaked around 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdowns, although it originally dates back to the 1980s.
“I dyed my hair this summer when I went to Italy to visit my family. I decided to dye my hair pink because I saw it all over Pinterest. I thought it looked cool, and I just wanted to join the trend. I plan on keeping the color until next summer, and I chose pink because it’s my second favorite color,” said senior Gloria Cauley.
Some think the pink peekaboo hair trend is cute, especially for the summertime. It’s bright, and people often wear bright colors during the summer, so it fits into the summertime vibe. Expect to see pink hair color to stay popular until fall when hair colors will likely transitioninto fall colors like brown, ginger, and honey blonde.
Personally, I love to people starting to get into fun hair colors again, and not be afraid to be bold and use their hair to express their creativity. Last September, I dyed my hair burgundy. I believe hair holds memories, so three months later I got rid of the burgundy and dyed my hair teal. My hair is still currently teal, and I will keep the color for a while because I love it, it’s very stand-outish, and many people tell me my skin tone makes the color pop.
If you do dye your hair, or if you’re considering it for the first time, be aware that dyeing your hair can be risky and unhealthy. It’s important to research the products you plan on using on your hair by reading the ingredients on the label, as well as online reviews. Some products can really damage your hair, so Sally’s Beauty is one hair product store that sells good products and has employees who can give you advice on products and how to apply them.
Another tip is to use a cream bleach rather than a powder bleach. Ion Bright White is a really good choice, and all you need to go with it is a 20 vol developer. Be sure to throw out any leftover bleach, always wear gloves, and protect your neck and hairline by rubbing on Vaseline first so the color won’t stain your skin. Ask those who have brightly-colored hair and they are likely to have horror stories they don’t want to repeat.
“In my junior year, first semester, I tried to do blue ghost roots. When they bleached my hair they didn’t leave the bleach on long enough, nor did they tone it, so it was green as a result,” said senior Taylor Marin.
The plus side of dying your hair is that it’s fun and shows personality, so even if your hair does end up a little damaged, remember one thing: Hair always grows back..
