With only two FCHS teachers teaching the mandatory Economics and Personal Finance needed to graduate, Fluco students have a 50% chance of having Gary Greenwood as a teacher at some point in their high school years. ,
Born in Florida and a graduate of the University of Florida, Greenwood majored in education in college. Before coming to Fluvanna, Greenwood taught in Washington, D.C., then made the move to Fluvanna because of what he calls its “land value.”
Greenwood chose teaching because he enjoys making connections with students and watching them progress throughout their school years.
“I started teaching economics because I like money, but I also wanted to share my knowledge with people and tell them things I wish I knew growing up,” he said.
In the classroom, Greenwood teaches his students using his website Old Man Money, where they can find their weekly assignments, as well as videos to help them complete those assignments. Greenwood’s website isn’t just a place where students can find their assignments; it’s a way for him to help others grow financially, as it features a table of contents with lots of information on things like credit cards, stocks, and trading.
Greenwood says his students would say his class comes with “a lot of work,” but despite that, he hopes that they finish his class feeling more knowledgeable about money.
“You should live so that you’re able to look back on your life and go ‘Wow,’” he said.
When he’s not at school, Greenwood tends to his farm where he grows mushrooms, and raises chickens and goats. “I run my little farm. That’s what I do for fun,” he said.
Being an economics teacher, Greenwood tends to be asked what he thinks about the current state of the U.S. economy, and specifically, the Trump administration’s tariffs. Greenwood says he isn’t worried.
“The economy’s not doing bad now, and I hope for the future that it’ll get much better,” he said.
