The boys’ varsity soccer team has gotten off to a hot start this season, with one particular player leading the charge. Senior Sean Southall has been scoring at an impressive rate, tallying four goals through the Flucos’ first five games. The team sits at a promising 3-3-1, heading into its next home game against Charlottesville High School on April 16.
Southall’s scoring surge began in the Flucos’ first home game against Madison County High School, when the senior recorded a hat trick in a dominant 6-0 win. This was a pivotal game for the Flucos, as out-of-district matchups can heavily impact the team’s chances of reaching regional play.
“Bagging three goals in one game really made me feel good and upped my confidence going into the rest of the season,” said Southall.
Southall has taken this season very seriously, knowing it is his final year playing high school soccer. He wants to help push the team as far as it can go. This year’s squad is also senior-heavy, with much of the starting lineup graduating in May. Many players and coaches have high hopes for the season, especially since several of the athletes have played together for years.
“Playing with the same group of guys for years and years has made us connect on and off the field, boosting our team chemistry,” said Southall. He also credits chemistry for helping fuel his strong scoring streak.
Coaches Chris Holman and Craig Cook have been very impressed by Southall’s start to the season and hope he can continue adding to his total. “He has been a great addition to the varsity squad since he started playing here. I really hope he can continue his current form throughout the season,” stated Holman.
The team is starting to rally around Southall as it heads into the next stretch of games. “He really is playing great. Love to see his confidence grow,” stated senior captain Brady Crisp.
The Flucos’ game against Charlottesville on April 16 will be a tough challenge, as the Black Knights enter the matchup with a 5-0-1 record and a 3-0-1 mark in Jefferson District play.
“They are going to be a tough opponent, but I know the team is ready, and the coaches are always behind us to support us,” said Southall.
