As spring begins in Fluvanna County, energy is building for the baseball season at FCHS. The JV and Varsity boys baseball teams have been working hard in preparation for what they hope will be a strong year. With rosters finalized and practices underway, both teams are focused on improving and competing at a high level. New Head Coach Jacob Critzer, who is taking over from long-time Baseball Coach Joel Gray, is confident in the talent of both the JV and varsity teams.
“We have two great groups of players on the JV and Varsity levels this year. As long as we play to our potential and keep the team chemistry throughout the year, there will be no one that beats us but ourselves,” said Critzer.
Practices have been structured to help players get conditioned and ready for the games ahead. The team has been working on the basics, learning their positions, and understanding the expectations for the whole season.
“Practices are focused on routine drills and going over the expectations for the whole season, as well as instructions on each group of plays we need to succeed throughout the season. The goal is to avoid mistakes and play with confidence once games begin,” said Critzer.
For varsity, leadership will be a key factor this season. The team will be led by captains Sam Loving and Carson Raines, who will help guide the team both on and off the field throughout the season.
“To ensure Varsity has success this season, we will focus on leadership in the right way, being fundamentally sound, and always showing sportsmanship and letting our game do the talking,” said Critzer, emphasizing the team’s priorities.
Key returning players for the varsity team include Sam Loving (Infielder), Kyle Harris (Infielder), Carson Raines (Catcher/Pitcher), Brody Shields (Infielder), Jacob Loving (Outfielder), and Tramayne Minor (Outfielder/Pitcher), who bring valuable experience and depth to the lineup.
