With the varsity softball season coming to an end in the coming weeks, the Flucos’ season has been strong, holding a 12-4 record through 16 games. The team is coming off a great win away at Monticello High School on May 6, beating them 9-6, and the girls look to continue winning as they prepare for an away game against 4-11 Charlottesville High School on May 12.
“I think this year was a big improvement mentally and physically. We have been getting along together way better since last year,” said sophomore Allison Gomez.
Fluvanna’s success this year is partly due to several seniors who will be graduating, which will impact the team negatively next year. However, this is only fueling the varsity softball players more. Head Coach Aime McCall and Assistant Coach Ashleigh Goode have high expectations for the playoffs. Meanwhile, the JV softball team also has plenty of young talent that is sparking excitement and hope for future seasons.
As for varsity, one of their four losses was at home against 9-9 Goochland, where both teams played well, but Fluvanna fell short, 6-3. However, the team could make a strong stride in postseason play with their young depth that includes sophomores, along with experienced skill from seniors and juniors.
The team recently played at home against 1-10 Albemarle, winning 21-4 and igniting a momentum shift, as the Flucos’ large margin proved their strength and capability to both themselves and other teams. The girls now have five games left, and ending on a high note before the playoffs is immensely important to them.
“I realized the team was special at the start of the year. We click with each other very well,” said McCall.
Finishing the year strong is very doable as they prepare to face familiar opponents they’ve already beaten this season. On May 15, they face 9-7 Spotswood at home. That game will be a challenge, but winning can further prove Fluvanna’s potential.
The team finishes the year on May 19 against 8-9 Louisa at home. They’ve faced Louisa away this season and lost 8-3, so that game will be an interesting one as Fluvanna looks to bounce back. Fluvanna will also have a tough matchup against Orange on May 7, against Charlottesville on May 12, and against 13-4 Western Albemarle on May 14.
You can find the schedule for both varsity and JV softball on the Flying Flucos Athletics website. Also, this video features Fluvanna varsity softball’s highlights against Orange County High School, where they won at home 7-3 on April 14.
