FCHS’ golf team is almost through its season, and the players have gathered quite a few wins under their belts. According to Golf Coach Wiley House, the team’s record is 7-9. This is quite an improvement from last season, when their final record was 2-10.
“We closed out the regular season with two strong wins, highlighted by our season-low team score of 160 against William Monroe and Maggie Walker. With the regular season now complete, we are moving into postseason play, beginning with the Jefferson District Tournament at Old Trail in Albemarle, followed by the Region 3C Tournament at Spottswood Country Club in Harrisonburg,” said House.
House noted that team members’ friendships have made a positive difference, with some players standing out in their own games while bringing everyone together.
“Several golfers have made a big impact. Jacob DeVane, Blair Marshall, Thomas Hance, and Caleb Kimble have consistently delivered strong scores and demonstrated leadership, while Tyson Owen and Christian Wood continue to provide key contributions to the team’s success,” stated House.
Only six golfers make it to the postseason based on the results of the Intrasquad Tournament: Road to Districts. Juniors DeVane, Marshall, Hance, and Owen, as well as senior Christian Wood, have earned their spots for the Jefferson District Tournament. The last spot is still open and will be filled soon. These six players will represent the school at districts and try to qualify for the Region 3C Tournament on September 29 at Spottswood Country Club.
Even with the rigorous schedule the game requires, being on the team isn’t just about the competition; it’s also the challenge and pace of the game.
“The thing I like about golf compared to other sports is that it is a challenging, but not physically draining sport–you can pace yourself and take your time to progress,” said sophomore Landon Kovarik, who has only been playing the sport for about five months.
Some players noted that whether you’re a golf prodigy or just playing for fun, the game offers many benefits. “Even if you’re playing badly, you’re still out in the fresh air, so you can’t really complain,” said senior Anthony Waguespack.
Waguespack noted that he also appreciates the bonds made outside of games. “My favorite part of the season so far has definitely been practices and just hanging out with the team on the van rides back from games,” he added.
