With the stress of the new year, some students may not even be thinking about sports. But for the FCHS Girls Volleyball team, they’re already eight games into the season. The varsity volleyball team has kicked off the 2025 season with a winning streak of 7-1. Both the varsity and JV teams hold daily practices after school, working on improving their skills, teamwork, and game strategies.
During practices, the team works on skills from real-game situations to basic skills such as serving and passing. These drills help the players get better as individual players, while also learning how to be a better team. With the mix of new and experienced players, the team has built strong team bonds.
“This season is going great so far, and I think it will continue to get better. We have a lot of young girls on the team this year, but our chemistry is better than it has ever been in the past, and the future of Fluvanna volleyball is looking bright,” said senior volleyball player Taylor Stringer.
According to Stringer, team bonding plays a major role in their success. Players often hang out outside of practice, whether it’s at team dinners, before games, or just spending time together. Their friendships help them trust each other on and off the court.
Recently, the team participated in the Farruggio tournament, held at FCHS in honor of Coach Tom Farruggio. They won every game and helped raise money for the cardiac center at UVA while giving the players a chance to compete and support a good cause. Stringer said that the event was “an amazing way to give back to the community.”
Throughout the years, the team has continued working to improve their performance, while also enjoying the game. Players are often taught to play different positions, so they can step in wherever the team needs them.
“We really want to just be versatile and have fun at the end of the day,” said senior and volleyball player Carson Johnston.
“Western was definitely our toughest match,” said Stringer. Throughout the years, the Lady Flucos seem to always argue that Western Albemarle’s volleyball team is a tough matchup, making the Flucos work for every point. Win or lose, it’s the type of challenge that helps the team improve and prepare for the rest of the season.
“They are a tough serving team and will probably get us out of our system, but we practice recovering from mistakes and working together to overcome our struggles every day,” Stringer added.
