Just four games into the season, the boys soccer program is already outscoring last year, with a total of 20 points, compared to last year’s 18. The varsity team is coached by Coach Jason Davis, while the JV team is coached by Craig Cook.
“The other players and I worked hard during the offseason to prepare for the upcoming season. We’ve put in a lot of effort, and with many new players eager to leave their mark, I think that both the JV and varsity teams have the potential to compete strongly within the Jefferson District,” said freshman JV Captain Gregory Ball. “This varsity team has grown up playing together, and I’m excited to see what they can accomplish. There’s a real sense of determination among the players, and we’re all pushing each other to be the best version of ourselves,” he added.
In the first varsity game of the year on March 17, the Flucos faced off against Liberty Christian and came out on top with a 7-1 victory. The Flucos took on Madison on March 20, with JV winning their game 9-0 and varsity winning theirs 8-0.
“I would say the team’s biggest strength is the depth and connections that we have. Other teams have strong talents, but I believe the team has what it takes to win Districts,” said senior and varsity player Kameren Green. Green is currently not playing after an injury during football season, but hopes to be cleared by his doctor to play on Senior Night.
Fellow senior Art Maqani also has a lot of faith in the team and says he could see them going far. “I’m excited to end my final season with a bang and possibly win the region with the guys I’ve played with since 8th grade. I have a lot of faith in these teammates,” he said.
Even the younger players are feeling positive about the season. “I feel a lot of pressure to perform being the only sophomore on the team this year, but good leadership from captains and coaches is helping to resolve any stress. Having faith in my middle and back line has helped me perform better, as they have done amazingly,” said varsity player and sophomore Gavin Underwood.
Their next games are April 15 away at Western, and April 17 at home against Orange.
