Merely five games into the season, the FCHS varsity baseball team is sitting strong with a 3-2 record. This is a positive start for the season and possibly sets up another district run.
The varsity coach this year is led by long-time coach Joel Gray, who has high expectations for the season overall.
“We have a very talented team that should be able to defend their Jefferson District Crown from last year. The key for the 2025 Flucos will be how consistently the pitching staff throws strikes and their decision-making at the plate,” he said.
One of the hallmarks of the varsity team is that many of the athletes have been playing together for years.
“The best part about playing is being able to share the field with all the guys I grew up with,” said senior varsity player Caden Harris, who just signed to play at UVA Wise. “Being able to walk out onto the field every day is something I could never replace, and that’s why I plan to continue to do it in college. I hope to see the team continue to come together as one, as the competition continues to get better and better moving forward,” he said.
Their second game of the season was on March 20 against Waynesboro High School. The Flucos won by a blowout, with a score of 20-3. This showcased their offensive firepower and defensive abilities. The team’s strong connection appears to be quickly building momentum in the early season.
On the JV side, the team is still trying to find its rhythm.
“The season is going pretty well, some hiccups here and there, but that’s expected with some younger players on the roster. For the rest of the season, [we hope to] see growth from our core and young guys to transition themselves to the next level,” said sophomore Connor Peterson.
Based on scores so far, both JV and varsity have the potential to make it to Districts. In particular, varsity is focused on defending its Jefferson District crown this year.
Their next games are on April 17, home against Orange, April 21, home against Waynesboro, and April 22 at Louisa.
