Fluvanna Sports in Review 10-14

Volleyball

On Oct. 11, the Lady Flucos were victorious with a score of 3-0 against the Louisa Lions. With the temporary loss of hitter Abby Sherman due to a concussion, the Flucos were able to pull together and reform the lineup, resulting in a significant victory. “We’ve been doing well. Our ball control is so much better, [and] so is our consistency. We’ve been working on being consistent and it’s helped. Every player is doing their part and it’s really paying off,” said hitter Madison Stoltz ‘18.

The Flucos also had a match on Oct. 13, with both JV and Varsity falling short to the Western Albemarle Warriors. The JV team was defeated by a score of 2-0, while Varsity was defeated by a score of 3-0.

Golf

The Fluco golf season ended last week on a high note Senior Jack Stanke competing at the State tournament. He shot a first round 89, and a second round 80 at The Tradition golf course at Stonehouse. Faced with cold and windy conditions that day, participants found scoring very difficult, but in the second round, conditions improved, as did the scores.

“The 2016 season was a good one. This was a great group of kids to work with. They worked hard to get better throughout the year, and their scores showed that improvement,” said Head Coach Bryan Searcy.

Varsity Football

The  Flucos left their home field on Oct. 7, taking on Monticello High School, “Mentally beat,” was how Fluco quarterback Jordan Melton described the team after their loss to the Mustangs by a final score of 14-35. Senior Dylan Walker scored their only touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Overall, the Flucos are 1-6 this season. However, despite the frustration of their recent loss and a challenging season, some players say they’ve retained a common spark of endurance and drive. “We felt depressed knowing that the season is winding down, but we are looking to kick it into high gear knowing that we face Albemarle next week,” said Melton.

Despite their losses, the Flucos are working hard to stay in shape and prepare to face their next opponent.   “Mistakes are what cause us the problems. What we’re trying to do is polish what we’re doing so mistakes are minimal,” said Coach William Watkins. The varsity team’s next game will be at home against Western Albemarle on Oct. 21.

JV Football

The JV team suffered the loss of a close game at home against Albemarle on Oct. 12. The Flucos were short on players that night, with only 12 available players, so they had to fight hard for their one touchdown, but a missed a field goal, a fact which ultimately cost them the game, which ended with a score of Albemarle 7, Fluvanna 6. took the win.

The JV team has three remaining games for their season, with the next being away against Western Albemarle on Oct. 19.
