As FCHS wrapped up the first spirit week of the year on Sept. 2-5, some students expressed contentment with the themes and events offered, despite the shortened week.
Since Sept. 1 was Labor Day, students were off from school. “I was really happy we had the day off. It gave me plenty of time to sleep in and prepare for the upcoming week,” said senior Cecily McMillian.
Once students returned to school, Tuesday through Thursday were filled with themes some said were the best yet, as noted in this article. SGA students collected “spirit points” during lunches based on a point for each person dressed according to the theme that day. Grades competed to see who could get the most points which would be announced at the end-of-week pep rally.
“As always, the students showed so much spirit, and it was really interesting to see everyone’s outfits,” said senior and SGA member Vanessa Vandevendar.
By Friday, students were preparing for a busy day. Seniors started the morning at 6:15 a.m. for their Senior Sunrise event, held at Pleasant Grove Park. For the rest of the school, the day began with an activity bell schedule, all leading up to 2:40 p.m., when the first pep rally kicked off with the senior walk, a cheer performance, fall sports captain introductions, games, and spirit week results. Principal Margo Bruce awarded the senior class the spirit stick for winning both the theme contest and the loudest class competition.
“The pep rally really showed how our school can come together and show Fluco Spirit,” said senior Cassidy Relyea. “Seeing all those seniors walk in prior years really didn’t prepare me for this moment and how surreal it is. Definitely a moment I won’t forget,” he added.
Later that evening, the first official varsity football game took place. The theme was neon, and the student section showed their bright colors. The game ended with a close score of 20–22 against Buckingham. Even though FCHS finished with a loss, a number of students still showed their spirit by gathering with friends to celebrate the start of the new school year at places like Papa Jim’s and Wahoo BBQ at Lake Monticello.
