Far and wide, you can see people wearing the infamous brand “Lululemon.” Some wear it every day, while others say they would never wear something so expensive. Walking through FCHS hallways, you will see some students wearing Lulu, and you’ll see students wearing clothes with the same look, but without the brand logo. “To Lulu or not” is a controversy that extends far beyond the doors of FCHS.
Although many buy and wear the Lululemon attire, even those who wear it have questions about the prices and the popularity of the brand.
“I think [Lululemon] is pretty controversial. It is very overpriced, but I love the way their products look. I think their tops are much better than the leggings,” said junior Riley Bishop.
Lululemon leggings usually cost between $98 and $140 each, while their tops range from $60 to $130 a piece, prices many would never consider paying. Those who do buy Lululemon say it is better “quality” and that it lasts longer because of the quality fabric the company uses. What is so special about it? According to Blue Associates Sportswear, Lululemon’s fabric is composed of a mix of Nulu, Luon, Everlux, Luxtreme, and Warpstreme. This blend of materials provides a unique texture and stretch to the body, making their clothes both comfortable and cute.
In comparison, Business Insider states that stores such as Old Navy only use a blend of 77% polyester and 23% spandex in their leggings. This allows Old Navy to make workout gear that is far more affordable and therefore, available to a wider audience. In contrast, for those who feel they can afford it, Lululemon’s unique blend attracts customers who are willing to pay extra for quality and durability.
Another side of the Lululemon appeal is the clout that comes with wearing “Lulu.” Many people in this day and age follow and compare themselves to others on social media, following the “popular” trends. Lululemon falls under this category, with many viewing those who wear Lululemon as part of the “clean girl” aesthetic, a style that is sleek and clean, and has leggings as a focal point.
“I love Lululemon. It just fits me so well and I wear it all the time,” said junior Kaiya Wrigley.
Some have no problems buying Lululemon at full price, but others choose to find the same (but gently-used) Lululemon products at stores such as Plato’s Closet and Kid-to-Kid. So many FCHS students get their Lulu collection at those stores.
Lululemon doesn’t only sell women’s attire; they also sell men’s clothing, including shorts, sweatpants, and T-shirts, although their men’s sales are a fraction of their sales of women’s clothing.
“Personally, I wouldn’t buy the clothing. It’s really expensive and I can get the same style of clothes for a lot cheaper at a different store,” said junior Jordan Lewis.
