Math teacher Lori Hoffman may seem like a relatively new face at FCHS, but she has actually been a teacher for 27 years. That changed in 2021, when she retired to take care of her granddaughter.
However, the school soon drew her back, as she returned to FCHS part-time to help students as a math interventionist, tutoring small groups of people to try to help them understand math better. She worked mainly with 8th-grade math and algebra students, tutoring them during WIN and after school.
In September, a math teacher retired, so Hoffman returned to the classroom as a Math 8 teacher. “It was a rough start, but I feel like I have now found my rhythm again,” she said.
Hoffman has always wanted to be a teacher, though many people talked her out of it, so she didn’t major in teaching. Instead, she got a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and an M.Ed. in Secondary Education. These days, Hoffman enjoys helping students understand their math curriculum and pass the SOL. She said she prides herself on being very patient, likes to stay organized, and is always looking forward to trying and doing new things.
“She is really good and understanding to work with,” said sophomore Caden Marshall.
If Hoffman had a choice to pick a subject to teach other than math, she said she would have picked Culinary Arts. She has always loved cooking and helping others, so she says she would love to help children learn to cook. She also loves making pastries. Some of her favorite items to bake are any kind of cupcake, specifically red velvet, which is her favorite to eat and bake.
After school each day, Hoffman does her daily yoga practice, then goes home to walk her dog and make dinner for herself and her husband. Once she finishes dinner, she enjoys doing some of her favorite hobbies like jigsaw puzzles, reading, and baking.
