Certain opportunities do not come around by accident, and this appears to be especially true for FCHS senior Jonathan Gretz. “Hardworking, consistent, and caring” are the words of one of Gretz’s closest peers, senior Hadon Hartoung, when asked to describe him in three words.
Gretz is also a vital part of the Fluvanna soccer team. “[Jonathan] is a strong player who works hard for the team and is very dedicated. The team is going through some big changes this year, but with Johnathan and others like him on the team, I’m confident about the upcoming season,” stated team captain Brady Crisp. According to Crisp, not only does Gretz bring strength, but he also brings stability in a time of change.
At this point in the season, Gretz’s record is 32-1, and he is leading the Fluvanna wrestling team as a team captain.
“It’s a really great opportunity that I’ve been given. It’s great to lead people and give guidance to those that are new to the sport,” said Gretz. He added, “The ability to push and encourage my teammates to grow and learn while also being someone they look up to is one of our major driving factors for me.”
Gretz is also on track for 100 wins in his high school career. As of Feb. 11, he is sitting at 99 wins and plans to secure his 100th win at Regionals on Feb. 14. At the Billy Wensel Tournament, Gretz had a record of 5-0, and he led the team to four wins and one loss overall.
“Jonathan did great. He’s a huge team player, and I always know we’re about to get a win when he steps on the mat,” said junior and wrestling teammate Matthew Bishop.
The team will be going to Rocktown for the regional tournament, where the top four wrestlers in each weight class will have the opportunity to advance to States. A total of 14 of the 16 starters advanced from Districts to Regionals. The bracket at Regionals is double-elimination style, meaning if an athlete gets two losses, they are out of the bracket.
“I’m excited for the postseason. I really think we have a great team with a lot of potential. Competition will get tougher, but I think this team can deal with the diversity,” said Gretz.
