FCHS sophomore Jayden Wrigley has quickly established himself as a profound shot put talent in the state of Virginia. Wrigley is currently ranked 5th in the statewide sophomore rankings, with a personal record throw of 45 feet and 5 inches. He and the Fluco indoor track team have had three meets so far this season, and he has already qualified for the state indoor track competition.
Wrigley began his shot put journey when he was in sixth grade, striving for improvement every year since. Even during the offseason, he spends extra time with his teammate, sophomore Alan Menendez, perfecting his form and power.
“Jayden is very consistent at shot put. His work during the offseason has definitely paid off. You can see the improvements,” said Menendez.
Wrigley has aided the FCHS indoor track team with his strong start to the season by boosting morale and setting a positive tone for the rest of the team.
“Jayden is developing into an excellent thrower,” said Coach Steve Szarmach. “He has gained a strong understanding of the shot event and has paired that knowledge with a great work ethic. Putting in the work is allowing him to improve far beyond the average thrower, and he also leads by example by always helping his teammates get better,” he added.
Although Wrigley has already qualified for the VHSL state meet, he remains focused on continuing his success.
“By the end of the season, I’m aiming to produce a 50-foot throw by staying consistent and working out after practice,” he said. Reaching the 50-foot mark would not only be a huge accomplishment for him, but would also help FCHS score higher at post-season meets.
When Wrigley is not engaged in the track season, his time is spent playing rugby for private leagues, even winning the national championship with the Maryland Roosters in 2025. He has also spent time in Spain as a player in tournaments and is looking to visiting Ireland to play rugby later this year.
