FCHS welcomed Deputy Jason Herring as its second School Resource Officer (SRO) alongside Lieutenant Joshua Greene. Herring’s office is located near the girls’ bathroom in the Cafeteria.
Herring brings years of dedicated service with him, having been in law enforcement since 2007. From 2007-2010, he was a Virginia Department of Corrections correctional officer at the Augusta Correctional Center. After taking a break from law enforcement, he returned in 2014 as a correctional officer at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail. He did many things there, such as working as a general or “floor” officer, watching over inmates all day. He also did transportation of inmates to and from other facilities, court hearings, and hospitals.
He left the jail in 2019 and came to the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office, where he started as a patrol deputy for his first five years there. He then worked in the courthouse for a few months before taking the SRO position last month. Herring said he loves it here in Fluvanna and plans on staying for the rest of his career.
“When I’m not at the school, I am usually helping out the sheriff’s patrol team on the road, answering 911 calls, or patrolling roads in the county, making sure everyone is driving safely. I also will help out in the court, providing security in the courtroom, or out serving citizens with court notices,” said Herring.
Outside of work, he’s very active. He enjoys going on runs and going to the gym. After school on most days, you’ll find him in the high school gym or running on the trails at Carter’s Mountain. Other things he really likes to do are trail riding on his ATV, fishing, hunting, and being out in his garage working on his ATV and vehicles. He loves going to baseball games, especially those of his son, who plays for Monticello High School.
Herring said his favorite part of being an SRO is getting to interact with the students. “I enjoy getting to know all of you, your interests, hobbies, and personalities. I think the FCHS student body is full of awesome kids who are really fun to be around and keep me laughing all day,” he said.
One of his main goals as SRO is to build a strong relationship with the students. “I’m not just ‘the school cop’. I want everyone to know that I’m here for you guys, to help you guys out with anything. My door is always open to you guys. Everyone is welcome to stop by my office anytime and see me,” added Herring.
