One of FCHS’ best-known tutors no longer officially teaches at the high school, but pulls from her years of teaching to guide Flucos in need of help with math or how to navigate college.
Lori Hoffman taught at Fluvanna for 16 years. Then in 2021, she became FCHS’ PVCC Career Counselor. She also serves as a math interventionist, someone who is available to help students who need tutoring in math.
“I used to teach math for 26 years. I taught until 2021, and then my daughter, Lauren, had a daughter,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman works mainly with 8th graders by helping them in the classroom. She also does after-school, before-school, and Fluco WIN tutoring. She said she loves what she does.
“Best job I ever had,” Hoffman said, noting that she compares her job to doing a puzzle, and she has to figure out what a student doesn’t understand about a topic and teach them in a way they will understand it.
Hoffman is originally from Virginia Beach and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Longwood before moving on to George Washington University where she got her master’s in secondary education. Before she moved to Fluvanna, Hoffman lived around the country, and after she married her husband, they moved to Hawaii. After that she went to New York, but found it too cold, so she told her husband she wanted to move somewhere warmer. In 2003, her husband got a job in Fluvanna and they have been here ever since.
Outside of school, Hoffman has many different hobbies. “I like to read, listen to audiobooks, do puzzles, cook, especially baking, and exercise,” she said, adding that one of her favorite books is “God of the Woods” by Liz Moore. Her favorite genre is mystery books, though she joked, “I can only listen to them because I go to the end and find out what happens.”
