Fantastic Beasts Delivers for Potter Fans
The story of Harry Potter was one of epic proportions and sold countless copies worldwide. With Potter, author J.K. Rowling created an exceptional, piece of work that will surely remain a classic for generations. Now this classic has birthed a spin-off that has also enthralled audiences.
The plot begins in 1926, 70 years prior to Harry Potter getting anywhere near Hogwarts School of Wizardry. Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is a British wizard who reminds us of our beloved Hogwarts groundskeeper Hagrid. Not only has Newt worked with dragons such as the Ukrainian Ironbelly (shown to us in Rowling’s Goblet of Fire), he has traveled the world in search of magical creatures which he rescues.
Newt carries his treasured beasts in a unusual fashion as all wizards must: a magical briefcase which he can walk into and which is apparently capable of holding large portions of land of different terrains, as well as a variety of creatures. Newt introduces new magical sights to the audience, including a darker side to the wizarding world.
In the New York setting to which Newt keeps returning, we see the curious differences between the magic communities of America and the United Kingdoms, as well as a new set of villains, heroes, and unexpected twists and turns. Deep subliminal messaging and plots aplenty are found throughout the film, delivered in excellent fashion.
This movie may not appeal to all, especially for those not in love with the Potter series, who may find the plotting a bit laborious at times since it is so focused on setting the stage for future installments. In fact, there is word that Rowling intends to write four sequels.
The film delivers various tips of the hat towards the original franchise, while standing on its own and carefuully building the world these characters live in. With mystery, action and humor, plus a pinch of drama, this movie is sure to amuse and dazzle.
Rowling has done it again and 4 of 5 wizard-enthusiasts are likely to approve. You may not enjoy the beginning of a story yet to unfold, but you simply can’t look away from the wonder and beauty with which it’s told. Family-friendly and pleasing, Fantastic Beasts is likely to bring in a new generation of wizards and witches with a flair known only known to J.K. Rowling.
