Fluvanna Sports in Review 2-17

Wrestling

On the weekend of Feb. 10-11, the Fluvanna wrestling team went to the Regional meet, where senior Ian Dillon placed fourth in the competition, enabling him to move on to States. “There were a few matches where I went out a little flat and didn’t perform how I would have liked to, but overall, I’m happy that I finished fourth because that qualifies me for States,” said Dillon.  He added that he has been working hard to prepare for states. “We’ve been doing a lot of cardio and fine tuning on my technique, so I’m conditioned for the matches,” he said.

Dillon said that he is ready for States and feels that he will perform to his best of his ability. “The other regions are really stacked which means a lot of tough competition for me, but I feel that I’ve prepared to my best for this competition and I feel that I will do fairly well.”

Swim and Dive

The Fluco Swim and Dive team was in action at Regionals on Feb. 7, where three of the Lady Flucos qualified for States. In Dive, Lydia Reynard placed 8th, Anna Hurdle placed 11th, and Emily Baker placed 12th. “I feel like I did okay. I finished in an average position, but I felt good with where I placed,” said Hurdle, who is in her final year of swimming for FCHS.

All three Lady Flucos then headed Feb. 16 for their state meet. “My main goal for this year was to make it to States, and here we are. I would like to finish in the top eight and would like to throw a double,” said Baker as they headed into their highest and final competition.

Girls’ Basketball

On Feb. 13, the girls’ basketball team challenged Fort Defiance High School in the Conference 29 quarter-finals. The girls pushed through and managed to maintain a four-point lead, ultimately defeating the Indians by a final score of 40-36 in what was a very tense game to the last.

The win moved the team on to the next stage in the Conference finals. Speaking after the game, Senior Captain Chaniya Brown said that “my team won it for us, for the seniors.” After such an exhilirating win, the girls looked forward to their next game against Broadway, and hopefully, a spot at Regionals.

On Feb. 15, the Lady Flucos traveled to roast the Broadway Gobblers at their house, but were met with a devastating loss. The Gobblers were the dominant team throughout the night both offensively and defensively, and the Flucos just could not keep up. Junior Captain Michelle Hammond said “in the last four minutes of the second quarter we kicked it in and tried our hardest.” However, at the end it wasn’t enough, and the Flucos fell to the Gobbblers by a score of 71-30.

Boys’ Basketball

Closing out their season, the boys’ varsity team faced the Western Albemarle Warriors on Feb. 13. The Warriors were able to make nearly every basket they shot, and to the Flucos’ dismay, they were unable to break the Warriors offense and were defeated by a score of 63-41.

Looking on the positive side for this last game of the season, junior Alex Logan said “This was one of our better games. We had a lot of hustle and a lot of intensity in the game.”
