Fluvanna Sports in Review: April 25-29
Boys’ Lacrosse
Due to a number of players being injured, the junior varsity and varsity boys’ lacrosse teams combined to make one varsity team against Monticello on April 29. The last time the Flucos went up against the Mustangs, the Flucos lost 14-2. The Flucos played much better against the Mustangs this time, and the final score ended up being 12-8. “Our coach always talks about setting personal goals for each game, and I think a lot of us reached some of those personal goals against Monticello. We played well,” said junior Nathan Carney. Multiple players scored for the Flucos, including Mykel Vest with one goal, Andy Guess with two goals, Cody Abbott with two goals, Matt Lang with three goals, and James Byram with six assists. The Flucos will take on Albemarle on May 3, Western Albemarle on May 6, and Eastern View on May 7.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Lady Flucos went up against the Monticello Mustangs on April 29. Monticello has a very skilled girls’ lacrosse team, so Fluvanna had a very difficult task facing the Mustangs. “They went on a run for a couple minutes where they would win the draw, take the ball down the field, and score. They are pretty good,” said senior Courtney Ott. The Mustangs overpowered the Flucos and they ended up winning 22-2. The junior varsity team fared a bit better, losing to Monticello 14-6. The Lady Flucos will play against Albemarle on May 3 and Western Albemarle on May 4.

Early on in the week, the Flucos were supposed to play Louisa, but due to inclement weather, the game was cancelled. The JV game was not cancelled, but the game did end early. The Fluvanna JV team had not lost a single game this season, but the Lions broke the Flucos’ winning streak and won 6-1. Later on in the week, on April 27, Fluvanna tried to come back in a game against Western Albemarle. Varsity was victorious, beating Western Albemarle 9-4, the second time that varsity has beaten them this season.

Boys’ Soccer
Both soccer team traveled to Louisa on April 25. The varsity Flucos took a while to get going, but eventually pulled away from the Lions and won in fashion, 5-0. “This win felt good for us. Last week was really rough for us losing against Albemarle and Charlottesville, but hopefully we can build momentum and keep adding winnings,” said junior Matt Rafaly.
The Flucos had only one day to practice before their next match on April 27 when they faced the best team in the district: Western Albemarle. The Warriors were up 1-0 the entire game until 30 seconds left, when junior Chase Evans scored off of a throw-in to tie the game 1-1. After two very intense overtimes, the game ended with a 1-1 draw. Overall, team members were fairly satisfied to be able to tie a team considered by many to be the best in the district. “This was a very good week for us. We are starting to play a lot better which is great since we are now coming close to the post-season,” said Evans.
The JV boys also did very well last week, defeating Louisa 2-0 early in the week, followed by a very hard- fought match against Western Albemarle where they came up just short, losing 1-0. Both teams host Powhatan on May 2 and Orange on May 5.

At the Western game, the Flucos were met with the same result as their first match against Western Albemarle earlier this season, losing 5-0.
