The Medford basketball team’s season kicked off in January, and from the start, the team showed strong chemistry and excitement. With the support of fellow Flucos, the energy in the gym was electric. When games were held during the school day at FCHS, large crowds of students showed up to cheer them on.
The Medford league gives special education players a chance to display their skills on the court. Some rules are different than regular basketball because players can travel, double dribble, and shoot on a variety of hoop heights, making the games even more fun to watch.
“This season has been really fun for us all,” said FCHS Medford team player George Gibson.
As the season’s end approaches, the team has been focusing on important areas. “The team is worried about wrapping up and finishing strong,” Gibson said. He and other players agreed that this year has been more fun and different compared to previous seasons.
“The year has had its ups and downs, but that goes for anything. The season has been great for coaches too, and it has felt different and way more fun than usual,” said Medford Coach Nick Ward.
The energy from the stands has brought enthusiasm that fuels the team during big moments, helping power the Fluco Medford team to its third championship in a row. The team won both the quarterfinal and semifinal matchups before securing the district title once again.
To start their championship run, Medford defeated Madison on Feb. 26. They then traveled to Orange on Feb. 27, where they won the championship for the third straight year.
The season will officially conclude with FCHS’ Senior Night on March 10 at 6 p.m. when the Flucos take on Orange. Seniors will be honored at halftime in what promises to be an exciting final game.
Once the season is complete, the team will be already looking ahead. “The team will be back next year, even better than this year,” Ward said.
