Fluvanna County boys’ JV and varsity basketball teams are midway through their season, facing tough records, but building something bigger than wins. As of Jan. 15, JV stands at 1-5-1, and varsity stands at 2-8. While records are often associated with success, these numbers only tell part of the story. The losing records may point toward a difficult season at first glance, but for these two teams, there is a picture as they continue to keep their heads up and work together as one, facing challenges head-on and building on unity.
Varsity is coached by Heath Bralley, while the JV team is coached by Brandon Townes. Bralley stated varsity is a “work in progress.” He highlighted Dedric Cooke ‘27 as the team’s biggest leader because he keeps everyone’s heads up in or after a tough game. Coach Townes used the word “developing” for his JV team, highlighting Caleb Ray ‘28, stating that, “He never fails to be a leader to all.”
Through tough losses and close games, the teams are endeavoring to stay resilient and learn from their losses, taking accountability. JV player Alexander Mundy ‘28, who most recently was sidelined due to appendicitis, has continued to motivate his teammates to stay in the game.
“The season could be better, but we’re working on it,” said Mundy, who further credited Cooke for lifting people up when they are down and getting the team’s attention when they are losing.
“It’s important to play together to win,” said varsity player Jake McCall ‘28 when asked what the phrase “One sport, one family” means to him personally.
Playing baseball and football as well, McCall has been around many teams, but he said this varsity team stands out to him. “Everybody gets along, works hard, and together, and is focused on trying to win,” shared McCall. He said he has gotten better at “being a better teammate” and “learning how to keep composure.”
As for Bralley, he said, “I have continued to emphasize the fundamentals to defend, share the ball, and make the extra pass.” He also highlighted the importance of getting support from players on the bench and a general excitement to play the game. His favorite game this season was against Heritage High School, where they won in overtime because the team fought hard and never quit.
Both teams run into the gym before their own games, warming and hyping each other up. Varsity players can be seen cheering on JV’s games, and JV does the same when Varsity is playing.
Behind the scenes, team managers play a huge role in keeping game days running smoothly. Team manager Amelia Mozingo ’27, along with others, has helped the teams with preparations such as making sure the bleachers are down, the basketballs and tables are set up, and the water bottles are filled. Manager Aryssa Chowdhury ’30 keeps up with the scores, stats, and fouls for the players in the stat book, providing feedback for both players and coaches to see what they can improve on or what play style works the best.
Varsity’s next game will be at home today against Monticello at 6 pm, while the JV team will play at 7:30. You can see their upcoming schedule at flyingflucos.org.
