This year’s Fluco varsity football season, which ended on Nov. 14, was the best in years. The final season record was 7-4, while the regular season was 7-3.
“This season was much more improved. You could tell the players were committed to the team and ready to work hard, and the environment overall was much better than other seasons,” said sophomore Elijah Harris.
“It’s been nearly a quarter of a century since Fluvanna Football won seven games. Winning that many games is a small moment in the recent history of the program, but a huge step towards setting a new standard for Fluco football and more,” said Head Coach Mitchell Pace.
Pace also mentioned the reason the team did better this year was because they spent more time in the weight room off-season, and that the team has bonded closely.
“Teamwork is really everything in football. Working with the team and getting our chemistry down made a big impact on our season,” said junior Kenny Klein.
Teamwork was another focus this season. “This season felt different because our players committed themselves long before the first game, showing up all summer and setting a new standard for work ethic and accountability. The team fully bought into Coach Pace’s vision, creating a stronger sense of the Fluvanna Football Program. The students and community members that showed out to all of our games, home or away, were crazy and helped us have the season we had,” said senior William Lambert.
Many Fluco fans traveled to Wilson Memorial High School for the playoffs on Nov. 14 to support the team. However, the Flucos lost to Wilson by a score of 41-29. One highlight of the night was when senior Garrett Jordan ran four successful touchdowns.
“We were very excited on the sideline and in the stands. These plays gave the players and audience much hope and kept them engaged. Even though the Flucos lost, we still tried our hardest against Wilson Memorial High School,” said Jordan.
