The varsity volleyball team claimed victory this season by climbing all the way to the regional quarterfinals, where they lost to Liberty Christian on Nov. 10. Throughout the season, the team focused on specific skill sets, such as serving and passing, instead of on games as a whole. Both varsity and JV held daily practices after school, improving their skills, teamwork, and game strategies while building a strong team bond.
“One of my favorite parts of this season was all the friendships and laughter I shared with my teammates. We got so close over the course of the season, and they truly are my best friends. Fluvanna volleyball isn’t just a team, but a family,” said player and sophomore Charlotte Gifford.
The team claimed a new winning streak record of 23-5, alongside many standout players and moments.
“A big moment was watching our younger hitters step up when people were injured. They called fast-paced attacks and found ways to score big points. One of our players blocked one of the best hitters in the state in the regional semi-finals, and another big moment was seeing one of our seniors break through a kill ceiling she had been working towards, getting more than 1000 career kills. The list could go on and on,“ said Volleyball Coach Christi Harlowe.
The team of 14 had many fluctuations over the season due to injuries, but they were able to overcome numerous obstacles to sweep the season.
“This team overcame adversity and continued to find ways to be successful. It was a perfect mix of experience and new energy. The seniors leave a continued legacy of high expectations and success to a hungry group of athletes that I feel will continue to meet and exceed expectations,” said Harlowe.
Every year can be different, as the team will always be changing, but the staff and team members this year had a consistent goal of working as a cohesive unit to improve every day.
“I enjoyed the family environment of the team and playing with my best friends. The excitement of games and the teammates that showed up in practice was the best part for me,” shared varsity player and senior Riley Bishop.
