Well over 600 Flucos purchased tickets to attend the 2026 Suicide Prevention Walk at the FCHS track on April 17. Started in partnership with local charity Luke’s Voice, the walk has been one of the most anticipated events for the spring.
“Unfortunately, many of us as adults and our young people have been impacted by the loss of a loved one to suicide. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for young people, and it is preventable,” said Student Outreach Intervention Specialist Jessica Lavin, who oversaw the event.
During the walk, students can buy concessions and merchandise, walk around the track, play spikeball, and hang out with their friends while listening to music and positive messages. The walk is put together by the school counselors and the school’s Fluco Club, who help out with the setup and experience, as well as the Culinary team, which made and manned the concessions and drinks.
“I really enjoyed being a part of putting the Suicide Prevention Walk together. There were a lot of fun activities, such as spikeball, which was my favorite, and like, facepaint and stuff. I loved being able to participate and help set stuff up. It feels good to serve the students, staff, and community in that way,” said junior Noah Bowman.
During the walk, students got the opportunity to hear from the founder of Luke’s Voice, a mother of a former Fluco who took his own life, and she encouraged students and staff to reach out to loved ones if they feel in need or alone. “We don’t make a permanent choice to solve a temporary problem,” she said.
If someone you love or know is showing signs of depression or signs of potential self-harm, reach out to them and be a friend, or call the Suicide Hotline at 988. You can learn more about Luke’s Voice by emailing [email protected].
