One of FCHS’s greatest traditions is the annual Macho Man tournament between the grades, and this year’s competition lived up to the hype.
The first round had the sophomores dominating the 8th graders, followed by a near-upset from the freshmen before the juniors came out on top.
“I definitely could’ve done better, but alas, I am just an eighth grader, I still have four more years to get better, so I’m not worried or upset or anything,” said 8th grader Josh Weimer.
“I was really excited this year for Macho Man. We had a crazy, strong team, and I was pretty confident we would win our first couple of matches. I’ve definitely gotten better from last year, and I’m pretty proud of myself,” said junior Brody Shields.
After the first two games, the juniors took on the sophomores. After a shockingly close game, the juniors eventually took their team to the final match after winning by only a couple of points.
The final student-on-student match in Macho Man involves the winning team from the preliminary rounds taking on the previous year’s reigning champs–in this case, the seniors. While the juniors played a good game, the seniors were able to maintain a multiple-point lead throughout the whole match.
“I always love playing Macho Man, since I was an 8th grader. I have always been playing back center since forever, and I love it. I was very confident in our team, and I knew that we would win. No offense, but the juniors didn’t stand a chance,” said senior Hadon Hartung.
Ultimately, the seniors won and moved on to the highlight of the event: the student vs. teacher match. “After the seniors got like a ten-point lead, foul play eventually took place, and the commentators tried to rig the scores, so even though it says the teachers won, anyone who watched the game like me will tell you that the seniors won,” said senior Cassidy Relyea. The final score against the teachers was 27-26, although the methods were controversial.
