In November of 2025, two FCHS Government teachers embarked on a journey of creating an activity to engage not only their students in Government classes, but also the entire school community. Melody Morgan and Sandy McCoy designed the “Waffles vs. Pancakes” debate, encouraging students to debate over which breakfast food was better, while learning about campaigns, debates, and the voting process.
The mock debate taught students how elections worked and functioned without discussing real-world politics and political parties.
“They’re having so much fun with it. I’ve never seen my students so engaged,” said Morgan at the time.
To capture the event, FCHS TV Production teacher David Small and senior Brooklyn Booker filmed and created “The Great Waffle Pancake Debate-Documentary.” Students can now learn about and experience the competition through the video camera lens.
“I always like to create alongside my students to keep my filmmaking chops up. This story was one that needed to be told,” said Small.
